Day 1-2: Hotel Mamoura

Day 1-2: Hotel Mamoura

After walking around downtown Casablanca, we eventually retired to our room at the Hotel Mamoura. We had set up a meeting with our airport taxi driver Mobarraque to discuss hiring a car and driver to Essaouira the next day.

Our plan was to drive through El-Jadida and to head down the coast through Oualidia. In discussing this with Mobarraque, he said the drive was quite boring and recommended we just head straight to Essaouira. We stuck to our guns to at least visit El-Jadida and haggled him down in price a bit. We left the meeting feeling pretty good with our plans.

After a hearty breakfast and a brisk walk to find some maps for the remainder of our trip, we came back to the hotel to find a different driver and a large empty tour bus. Without much of an alternative, we got on the tour bus and left. En route to El-Jadida, Heather asked our driver why we were driving below the posted speed limit. He informed her that since we were in a tour bus, the maximum speed he could go was 80 km/h (instead of 120). Our expected 4-hr drive to Essaouira was to become an 8-hr marathon. We suspect this may have been the reason we were pressured to drive straight to Essaouira.

We declined Mobarraque's "generous" offer to provide transportation for the remainder of our trip. We would suggest to anyone who wants to do see this portion of Morocco to rent a car and do a self-drive tour. The roads were well paved, not all that complicated and relatively deserted (we drove on a Monday in mid-February). Even paying the one-way rental drop off fee would have been better than the tour bus that didn't go where we wanted to, and took longer!

Stunning Hassan II Mosque, Casablanca, Morocco

Stunning Hassan II Mosque, Casablanca, Morocco

Probably due to the combination of time difference and long flights , I did not sleep well on my first night in Casablanca, Morocco. It was interesting to hear calls for prayers from mosques - very atmospheric. The friendly receptionist at Hotel Central gave me a map and advice on what to do around Casablanca, how to go to the airport by public transport etc. I was grateful for his advice. I walked around fifteen minutes from my hotel to the top attraction on my list in Casablanca, Morocco - the Hassan II mosque.
